I, EXACTLY LIKE RAINWATER, SLIP TOWARD WORMS UNNOTICED

Nicholas Alti

I wanted
a wide open field
so razed everything

when the field was wide open
I hid from it

          ~|~

somewhere
on my body
a monstrance

through it
you can see
I’m matter

          ~|~

I miss
distinctly
being forgiven

& being held
like a spell
by my mother

          ~|~

whales

I

I’m so unlike
pretty things
you might see
in pictures, in bodies

          ~|~

I, exactly
like rainwater
slip toward worms
unnoticed

& exactly like worms
watch dirt turn to mud
fascinated by melting

          ~|~

I make love
to a sigh
carried off
by the wind:

a moon sized flower,
kisses good morning

this is a vacancy
& a firearm

a way to turn absence
into burning

Nicholas Alti
